People do not stop being human when they clock in.
Leading teams can be exhausting, fulfilling, challenging, growth-inducing, and extremely messy. People are exquisitely complicated, and that complexity is part of both life and leadership. When you lead a diverse team—whether salespeople, contractors, marketers, administrators, or creatives—you are not simply managing performance metrics or workflows. You are navigating real human dynamics. Family struggles, emotional stress, personal conflict, ambition, insecurity, burnout, relationships, and unresolved tensions often spill into the workplace because people do not stop being human when they clock in.
I remember working as a sales leader and serving as the female manager on a team where I had to intervene and sit in on HR meetings involving inappropriate fraternization within the team. Those conversations were uncomfortable, delicate, and necessary. In environments where leadership teams are composed of both men and women, especially within a highly litigious society, representation and balance in leadership matters. Different perspectives are often necessary to navigate the realities of human behavior with wisdom, discernment, fairness, and accountability.
What I appreciate now is that every leadership role I have held—whether in sales, ministry, operations, mentoring, or academic environments—has taught me something about people and about myself. Leadership is not merely about strategy, productivity, or outcomes. It is about stewarding people through moments that are sometimes beautiful and sometimes deeply complicated. It requires emotional intelligence, communication, patience, boundaries, discernment, and humility.
As I come to the completion of my master’s degree program, I realize even more clearly that leadership cannot be separated from humanity. The theories, frameworks, and models are valuable, but real leadership happens in the tension of everyday life, where people are simultaneously gifted, wounded, hopeful, ambitious, fearful, resilient, and growing.
Life is both delicious and completely messy. It is constantly shifting, stretching, refining, and surprising us. Wherever we find ourselves along the journey, we are all evolving through experiences that shape who we are becoming. Honestly, I feel privileged to have been entrusted with the opportunity to lead, learn from, and grow alongside a distinguished group of gloriously messy people. Including me.
